The Blog o’Beer 2009 Awards

January 3, 2010 under Uncategorized

Best Pub
Well, what I mean by this, is best pub I paid a random visit to. Now there are plenty of places we could name, but we go there all the time. So I’m going to name the best place we’ve been once. This year the award goes to The Victoria Inn in Salcombe. Great welcome and fantastic beer, making this place worth while checking out.
Worst Welcome at a Pub
The Old Lock and Weir Inn in Bristol, wins this hands down! Not the most friendly people ever…
Best Brewery
Hands down, it has to be Skinners. It might have been because we were in Cornwall for a while and drank a fair bit from them, but they were all beautiful. Its just a shame that they were closed when we tried to visit!
Worst Breakfast
Breakfasts this year have included hotels, B&Bs, Pubs, and Cafes. The worst of them has to be found at the Plume of Feathers in Princetown, it was pricey and cold. Not nice after a bad nights camping on Dartmoor!
Crazy Media Story of the Year
Tactical Nuclear Penguin. Its a beer, designed to be drank like whiskey. How is this worthwhile news?
Disappointment of the Year
People dont agree with me and the rest of the table I was on that evening, but Titanic Velvet Curtain was so bad, we didn’t finish it.

Agree with any of the above?

The Salcombe Pub Crawl – The Fortescue Inn

November 13, 2009 under Pubs

Well I have to admit, I don’t remember much of the stags Salcombe journey to the final pub, The Fortescue Inn. This was mostly because myself and another one of the guys walked on, while the stag was pointed in the right direction by a couple other members of our party… And to be honest…. From the looks of it the stag insisted on having a chat with anyone who took a slightest interest in the stag party.

The Fortescue Inn was a nice little place, split into two this is a pub that is tailed for many different people. One half, it’s a Very gentle looking pub, serving Otter. Now anyone who reads this blog on a regular basis should know, serving Otter is one way to get my love!

Walking towards the toilets and wondering into the wrong (or Right door) leads you into the bar section. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the main live music venue for Salcombe. Didn’t try any of the drinks here, but I imagine it’s much the same as the main pub. Sadly our evening came to an end here as the Stag was starting to feel a little worse for wear… Didn’t stop him from ruining some of the way back to the youth hostel!

Sorry for the mess btw…

The Salcombe Pub Crawl – The Kings Arms

November 8, 2009 under Uncategorized

Well then moved onto the Kings Arms.

Now… it was here where the beer may…have started to take affect. But all credit to the bar man, he joined in the fun without any fuss or bother at all. He was also a top guy for helping the stag with his Jägerbomb – just a tip – if it damages your teeth – you’re doing it wrong!

The Kings Arms was also the scene of the “Witches Omelette”, dont ask me what was in it, but in at least involves a Bailyes, and a Pickled Egg. Such bad stuff that we went outside while he drank it!

So yeah… Sorry about the noise folks!

The Salcombe Pub Crawl – The Ferry Inn

November 7, 2009 under Uncategorized

Our next stop in Salcombe was the Ferry Inn.

Its probably worth mentioning that this is probably the sort of place you go to during the summer, to enjoy the out door sun, and the scenery that the night had hidden from us. The inside was alright, nothing special at all, and sadly you can also say the same about the beer. Palmers Ale? Anyone heard of it?

Its alright. Like the pub itself. Its alright in a, its not a bad beer kinda way. It reminds me of Tetleys if Tetleys didn’t taste so much like water.

Thanks has to be paid to the guy that brought the stag a shot – top fella!

So yeah… like everywhere else in Salcombe. Its nice – but the beer itself… its not great

The Salcombe Pub Crawl – The Victoria Inn

November 3, 2009 under Uncategorized

Well the first stop on the Stag tour was this great little pub. With that in mind – must pubs in Salcombe seem to be quite little, so I suppose you can ignore that remark in someway, but this place is nice. It has a nice “homely” feel, the open fire they had helping a lot to this feel.

The staff and crowd helped us feel welcome. It must be easy to feel worried when a bunch (13 of us), takes of their tops to reveal stag party T Shirts – but there was none of that, with plenty of interest in the odd looking creature on the t shirts themselves.

Beer wise, you have the reliable Tribute from St Austell Brewery . Always a fine beer!

For further information there is the Victoria Inn website or even the blog - worth while checking out!

The Salcombe Stag Pub Crawl

November 1, 2009 under Pubs

If you follow us on Twitter, you’ve probably realised there was a stag do over the last weekend.

Now before I get started on reviewing the pubs, there is just one thing you need to think about if you’re having a stag do at the Youth Hostel in Salcombe.

Its a loooonnng way away from any pubs! So be warned!

…but the views are beautiful…
