Exeter Food and Drink Festival

April 21, 2009 under Uncategorized

From Iccleannes Ramblings;

We quite enjoyed it in the afternoon, looking around all the stalls and get as many free samples as possible!!

Anna and I also had a go at the Taste Challenge, which was good – a sensory perception exercise. Smelling, touching, tasting and seeing different items to try to work out what they were. You don’t have to be a child to enjoy the fun!

We left to go to The Imperial, one of our Wetherspoons pubs, to meet up with Dan (who was coming up from the train station). The evening event started at 6pm, and Dans train got in at 5pm – so no point him paying £5 for less than an hour. We had food at Imperial, then walked back to the festival for the After Dark event. I can’t say I was too impressed with it. The music/band had too much base and it was just pretty rubbish.

The Weekend that was…

Wetherspoons International Ale Festival

Now I’m liking the look of this! Sadly its on over the same time as the Exeter Food and drink festival, so I’m a little worried about the wallet – and the diet. But I’m thinking a little bit of time in the Imperial beer tent may need to be done.

Chandos Deli – Exeter

Chandos Deli ExeterSo this is something a little nice. Its a little pricey, but its nice. Basically you can get…well…a lot of nice food and drink from here. Such as fresh rolls, samosas, fresh juice oh and a fantastic range of Beer from Bath Ales. So if you fancy stocking up, but want to avoid Bristol – give this place a try!

Personnally I would recommend the Barnstormer, but there are plenty of others there.

The Exeter Food and Drink Festival

The Exeter Food and Drink Festival: 17th – 19th AprilExeter Food and drink Festival After Dark

Now this is something a little bit special.

A weekend dedicated to sampling the best food and drink that the South west has to offer, with a beer festival in the evening.

We wondered around the festival during the day time last year – not sure why we didn’t stick around in the evening…

The Hour Glass Pub

February 22, 2009 under Uncategorized

Last night we got taken down a few back streets, a few dodgy alleyways and led to probably the best pub in Exeter. There isn’t many pubs you walk in and just feel a friendly atmosphere. Its a little cramped but has loads of character.

If you like whiskey, its a place that needs to be checked out if only to see the vast amount of whiskeys they have on their shelves. Beer wise I recommend “Proper Job” from St Austell Brewery, a fresh drinkable light beer with almost a hint of Lemon. Almost reminds of Waggledance from Youngs – except with less Honey.

Hogshead, beans, and the breakfast that never was.

November 29, 2008 under Uncategorized

The idea was simple. To go into town, maybe have breakfast / lunch, and do some shopping. Due to previous success of finding the ultra cheap All day breakfast, we chose to go to Hogshead.

11:50 We try wondering into the upstairs bar at Hogshead just to be told it wasn’t open yet, but to hang on for ten minutes. (weird we were in there at 11 last time?) There was no room downstairs so we decided to wonder around another shop and come back.

12:05 We’re the first ones in the bar making our order for two all day breakfasts and coke (one without beans). I mutter to Anne that we could play pool but trusting our pool skills the food would probably come before we had potted anything.

12:15 Feels like the heating dies as it gets colder in the bar…

12:20 Food starts to get served to people who order after us…

12:25 What looks like two breakfasts come out, the guy wonders past our table for two seconds – turns around and runs off and hides.

12:26 Upon chasing the said food, I get told that one of the plates had beans on so got taken back.

12:30 As I continue to shiver in the pub I put my scarf back on.

12:36 We complain about lack of food and advise if its an issue we would welcome the stupid beans!

12:40 We start coming up with an idea to complain every 5 minutes until either we crack or the staff crack and give us our food.

12:41 A very apologetic member of staff (who by know is looking like breakfast) comes over and advises the food is on its way. I grumble that I cant torture the staff…

12:43 We get our food…with the bloody beans on both plates! Never mind we just wanted food! We start tucking in…the toast seemed a little cold, but I was willing to let it off – toast gets cold…the sausages were warm… the hash browns were like cold rocks of potatoes. We then realise that Anne’s plate didn’t have hash browns on at all.

We take the food back and ask for money back. At least we got a free drink as part of the meal deal, but I surpose the moral of the story is not ask for something to be removed from an order at Hogshead. They cant handle it.
