Innis and Gunn – The Whiskey Version

September 12, 2009 under Uncategorized

(I’ve come across a few old reviews that were saved on Facebook, so I’m reposting them here)

It comes in a box so it has to be nice

Well thats my impression when I see it on the shelf, the combination of the box and the suggestion of using a glass (as part of its sampling suggestion) lends this to being a classy beer.

My taster remarked on the strength of the beer, and to be honest it probably tastes stronger then it really is, due to the whiskey taste and smell the beer has. Probably in no small part thanks to the use of whiskey barrels during the production process.

To sum up: a fine beer which is worth while picking up from your local super market.

Malaysian woman to be caned for drinking beer?

August 25, 2009 under Uncategorized

A Malaysian court has reportedly ordered a review of the caning sentence given to a woman caught drinking beer.

The main judge at Pahang’s Islamic court put the caning on hold pending the review, saying the sentence was “too extreme”, the Star newspaper said.

If the sentence is enforced, Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno will be the first woman to be caned in the country.

Now I dont quite understand what is going on. Was she going to be caned because she was a women drinking beer, was it the act of a Muslim drinking beer, or was it because she was drinking beer in public?

Can anyone explain?

Can having a beer be an act of Worship?

August 11, 2009 under Uncategorized

Gordon C. Stewart seems to think so:

Sometimes having a beer is a sacramental act, a kind of holy moment, a foretaste of the kind of world we seek, the dissolving of the divisions, community created boldly by grace out of the vain searches for innocence and the broken, rancorous claims of righteousness.

I so very agree!

The Grand Otter Round Up! Part 1

July 22, 2009 under Uncategorized

Otter Beer Bright Devon AlesLast week we went on a small tour around East Devon, ending up in Budleigh Salterton. It may appear to be a quiet sea side town, but at least it has a decent cheap Threshers. What I was impressed with was the 3 bottles of local beer for 6 quid. We brought three bottles of Otter Beer:

Otter Bright.

Tastes light and looks it as well with its very blond colouring. It does taste very refreshing, but doesn’t have the freatest amount of taste. Possibly a good beer for people who are far too much into Lager, with that in mind – it is a fine beer to have while enjoying the sun.

Otter: Beautiful Daze

Devon Otter Beer Beautiful DazeI have to admit. I am confused. This is a nice beer – its a good drink, and refreshing, like Otter Bright mentioned above, while having a stronger malty tast. Making it more of a beer that lager lovers may turn down.

But – and here’s the thing I’m confused about. If you buy it on tap in a pub you’ll find it known as Otter Bitter. When I tried Otter Bitter in a pub – I really didn’t enjoy it, I found it boring and tasteless. The only thing I can think of is that the Beautiful Daze was chilled – maybe it was warm in the pub? I can’t remember to be honest.

Still to come: Otter Head

Beer Engine Piston BeerWith many thanks to my parents, I’m currently enjoying a couple of Pints of Pistons Bitter from the Beer Engine in Devon. Taking full advantage of the take away service they have. Sadly its losing its life a little as its been more then three hours since purchase, but the fact that its still frinkable really does speak volumes for the smooth tase of this beer.

Beer or Wine?

July 4, 2009 under Uncategorized

Sometimes wine is just a more practical choice then Beer.

For starters wine (should) lasts longer then a pint. Meaning less time going back to the heaving bar!
