Christmas Beer: Otter Claus

November 24, 2010 under Beer Reviews

Its not Christmas yet, but in a months time we’ll all probably be caught up in the madness of Christmas, and I’m sure you’re probably going to be wanting something for the beer lover in your life… or if you’re a beer lover then something for yourself. If you’re in Devon then you could do a lot worse then Otter Claus, the seasonal ale from the Otter brewery.

I say seasonal… not Christmas, as in the words of the Otter Brewery website:

We firmly believe that one particularly good beer is better than a bucketful of seasonals. So, although it may be a bit cheeky, we have one winter ale that forms the basis of our seasonal range. This delicious 5% beer is dark ruby in colour and has a well balanced flavour with a bittersweet chocolate edge. This comes from the careful use of Fuggles and Challenger hops.

Yes it is a little cheeky, but its a nice beer – and if Otter have an excuse to offer the beer at other times of the year, then it can only be good for us.

If you hang around Devon, then I would recommend checking out Darts Farm to pick up a bottle.

(Yes I am gushing… no this post wasn’t sponsored by Otter…)

Beer Review – Meantime Pilsner

November 14, 2010 under Beer Reviews

Whats in a name anyway?

I was expecting quite a harsh beer when I picked this up on the cheap from Sainsburys.

I was wrong. Thankfully.

Its lively when you first pour it – but settles quickly, for a nice gentle drink.

If you’re passing one, drop into a Sainsburys, see if they have it cheap, and grab yourself one!

Tasting Notes: Beeryani

October 25, 2010 under Beer Reviews

Now, please dont judge me.

Over the weekend we found ourselves in the local Wetherspoons – we had vouchers to take advantage off… While we were there we came across Beeryani from The Exeter Brewery.

Its a confused little beer. On one hand theres not a huge amount of taste there – its almost like a cool crisp lager, but to look at it you’d think its a wheat beer from Europe…. but there really isn’t too much there to write home about.

I suppose the trust test is in the drinking. Dont drink it as a session beer, but have it to help keep you cool…. maybe while eating the Sweet Chilli Noodles?

Budweiser Route 66 – Beer Review

August 30, 2010 under Uncategorized

Well I found something that looked a little new in our local tescos. It was a warm day, the beer looked refreshing, and at £2.50 for a 4 pack I figured it was worth a  go.

So what is this new beer? Well “Budweiser 66″ is Budweiser’s attempt to cash in on the current increase in mild beers. After all, Becks Vier and Stella 4% are at it, this is Budweisers version of it. Does it add to the marketplace? Well – kinda.

Taste wise, theres not much to it… and I suppose I’m being polite in a way… BUT whats the beer designed for? If its summer drinking then its a great beer. If thats the case then I’m kinda confused, why wasn’t this beer released over Easter?

If you want an ale taste then look else where. If you dont care, and just want something to refresh the tastebuds which tastes good… then give it a go. At £2.50 a shot… you cant go wrong.

A Bad Bottle of Otter Bright?

August 30, 2010 under Uncategorized

I’m sure this isn’t sediment… Looks a little too lumpy, it was also kinda floating a it was poured.

The best before date is next year… So I’m kinda confused.

I am a fan of Otter Bright…but I really hope the other one I have isn’t like this!

Needless to say – this bottle of Otter Bright wasn’t drunk…

Best Curry Beer? (A Beer Review of sorts)

January 23, 2010 under Uncategorized

Last night was curry night in the flat. To celebrate the curry, I decided what was the best beer to go with the curry in question:

First up was a Fosters. The student choice! Slightly fizzy and tasting a bit like water, I only drank this as something to drink while cooking. Seemed to improve vastly after a while, as it got less fizzy, and a little smoother in taste.

Still cant take it seriously.

As the curry was served, out came the Kingfisher. Personality wise Kingfisher blew the Fosters away. It was lively with an odd aftertaste that neither myself nor the misses could really put our fingers on. The problem is its a little bit to lively, its perfect for a burping contest, but not something you want when eating curry.

When I’m eating curry, I’m wanting something smooth, and weirdly (when you consider its name), Cobra was it. While Kingfisher was a struggle to drink, Cobra was a joy in comparison – with far more taste then Fosters ever did.

Dont get me wrong, in the land of the lager – Gambrinus is still king – but thats hard to get hold off. So with a curry – Cobra will do…. Now I just need to find a decent ale to go with a curry instead…
