Finding Beer you forgot about!

It gets even better when your expectations are more then met. The label to this (delayed) Christmas beer talks about coffee, and roasted chocolate…which – well are not my favourite things to be in beer. But in this case, its really quite drinkable.

The second thing is that this beer is as dark as the night is long. Looking at it, you wouldn’t expect it to be as thirst quenching as it really is.

Next Christmas. Track this Beer down. Its worth it.

Its a good beer for a pint or two but I wouldn’t want any more of it then that… but maybe I’m doing it a disservice. Maybe on a hot Summers day in a nice beer garden I’d be wanting plenty of this stuff.

I’ll just have to hunt this stuff down over this Summer, and find out.

Bath Ales

The first of the three box set I’m sampling is “Barnstormer”. Its a fruity dark ale, with an slight smell of chocolate. It looks deep and heavy, but doesn’t taste like it. Its thirst quenching, and tastes like the sort of beer that you could have a good session with.

Imagine when you see someone tucking into some really sweet desert. Maybe something chocolatey, maybe something from the local sweet shop (if you have one). Either way. Imagine something really sweet.

Thats what the after taste of “Golden Hare” from Bath Ales hits you with. The beer itself is nice and refreshing, but the aftertaste kinda makes you wish you picked up something else.

Shame as I quite liked Gem and Barnstormer from the same Brewery.

Personnally I would recommend the Barnstormer, but there are plenty of others there.

Its worth noting that the first thing you notice when you find the pub that the local area is a very nice part of Bristol, with the pub right next to the Canal. A fact that the pubs web site doesn’t seem to realise. (Photos may or may not posted at some point)

The beer itself was local Gem from Bath Ales. A good darker beer, which reminded me a fair bit of “Otter” from Devon. A definate taste of the west country Gem is the sort of Beer that Ale fans should enjoy. Food itself was a tasty Ham Baguette with a portion of Chips. In general the amount of food on offer wasn’t great, but it was nice and not too expensive.

So in conclusion, good food, good beer (if you dont have to drive), but the people in the pub were not too friendly. So do go along, just dont talk loudly, have fun, and dont look anyone in the eye. 

Maybe we should have gone next door to the Chequers Inn?
