Innis and Gunn – Rum Cask

October 17, 2009 under Uncategorized

In a mad attempt to drink something that isn’t Guinness, last night I dug our last bottle of this beautful stuff out of its hiding place. I reviewed this last time – still think its beautiful now. Gentle, yet deep tasting. I’m still amazed at the smell of rum, this time I was also very aware of a little fizz that was well gorgeous.

You’re not going to be able to pick this up by itself again for a while I reckon – but I did see it on sale earlier in a Christmas box set in Sainsburys. With two other beers from Innis and Gunn I may not wait for Christmas.

Another Reason Not to Vote Conservative

October 7, 2009 under Uncategorized

DRINKERS will face late night ‘alco-tax’ under a Conservative government in a bid to crack down on Britain’s binge-drinking culture.

The Conservatives also plan to increase taxes on super-strength beer, cider and alcopops to stop teenagers getting “very drunk quickly and cheaply”.

A four-pack of super-strength lager would rise by £1.33 and a large bottle of alcopop would increase by £1.50, shadow home secretary Chris Grayling said.

He told the Conservative party conference in Manchester the tax rises would not hit “responsible drinkers”.

He said: “The ordinary pint in the pub will not be affected and there will be exemptions for some local traditional products.
But we’ll call time on the drinks that fuel antisocial behaviour.”

Daily Express

To put it simply. The Conservatives are saying that they will slap more tax on super-strength beer, cider and alcopops. I have a few worries about this. How strong does a beer have to be to be “super-strength”? Is this going to affect perfectly normal ciders that perfectly sensible people like drinking? And…well… I dont care too much about alcopops… There are comments about some local traditional products being exempt but how do small businesses go about proving they should be exempt?

Surely this is just another tax on a stressed out population who just want to have a drink!

This is all against the back drop of Conservatives not following their own ban on expensive alcohol during the conference. David Cameron being the latest person to be caught out (see left!)

Beer Review – Taylors Tipple (Nick Staffords Hambleton Ales)

Beer Review - Taylors Tipple (Nick Staffords Hambleton Ales)

Well there I was in Sainsbury’s, taking advantage of not being with the wife in that I wondered down the beer aisle… Now when I look for a new beer to try, I’m ashamed to admit that appearances do count, and this oddly posh looking bottle did manage to catch my eye.

The bottle talks about a berry and citrus aroma, pouring the beer I did pick up on something “citrus-ie”  - not sure about any berry’s, buts its a nice almost surprising  smell anyway.  (cant believe I’m going on about how a beer smells!)

Anyway! The beer itself tastes somewhere between gently malty and gently “citrus-ie”. If you’re a fan of lighter beers – give it a go next time you’re in Sainsbury’s. If you prefer darker beers then dont.

Do you Pray and drink Guinness?

October 1, 2009 under Uncategorized

If you are, then you might be interested in this. The Christ and Pop Culture site has been exploring what can be learnt from a 250 year old drink:

What Can You Learn From A 250 Year Old Drink?

Writing about alcohol on a Christian web site is like mentioning fire in a crowded theatre: it is bound to create quite a panic. But something is happening this week that I felt I could not ignore. September 24th will mark the 250th anniversary of Guinness. What makes this an interesting event is not simply that it marks 250 years of brewing for Ireland’s national beer, but rather that the man behind the beer is so remarkable.

Many Christians will find it surprising to know that Arthur Guinness was actually a devout Protestant and lover of Jesus. As a Christian Guinness had a deep social conscience. He was concerned for others and as he knew of Jesus’ love for the least, so he saw his role as a follower of Jesus to care for others too. Of primary concern for Arthur was the widespread drunkenness among his fellow Irishmen. At that time the primary alcoholic beverages of choice were whiskey and gin, both of which were cheap and high in alcoholic content. This meant getting drunk was extremely easy. Arthur’s heart was grieved by the social ills that drunkenness had created and so he prayed that God would provide a solution. What makes Guinness unique is that in praying this prayer he was also willing to be part of the answer to that prayer if God would so choose to use him.

Pubs set to serve beer in two-thirds of a pint glasses

September 27, 2009 under Uncategorized

Saw this on the Telegraph website

The Government has decided to end more than 300 years of history by relaxing the law on pub glass sizes.
Currently beer can only be served in pint, half and third of a pint measures.

Surely this is crazy. Ok so pubs dont HAVE to do it, but its another service that they may feel pressured to offer customers. I just cant wondering what the point of this is? Who wants that little bit less of a pint?

After all the difference between two 3rds a pint, and a whole pint is very little once you’ve taken back wash into account…
