Fancy a Beer?

By Andy, 19 November, 2009, No Comment

Drinking alcohol every day cuts the risk of heart disease in men by more than a third, a major study suggests.
The Spanish research involving more than 15,500 men and 26,000 women found large quantities of alcohol could be even more beneficial for men.
Female drinkers did not benefit to the same extent, the study in Heart found.
Experts are critical, warning heavy drinking can increase the risk of other diseases, with alcohol responsible for 1.8 million deaths globally per year.
The study was conducted in Spain, a country with relatively high rates of alcohol consumption and low rates of coronary heart disease.
The research involved men and women aged between 29 and 69, who were asked to document their lifetime drinking habits and followed for 10 years.
Crucially the research team claim to have eliminated the “sick abstainers” risk by differentiating between those who had never drunk and those whom ill-health had forced to quit. This has been used in the past to explain fewer heart-related deaths among drinkers on the basis that those who are unhealthy to start with are less likely to drink.

Another Reason Not to Vote Conservative

By Andy, 7 October, 2009, No Comment

DRINKERS will face late night ‘alco-tax’ under a Conservative government in a bid to crack down on Britain’s binge-drinking culture.
The Conservatives also plan to increase taxes on super-strength beer, cider and alcopops to stop teenagers getting “very drunk quickly and cheaply”.

A four-pack of super-strength lager would rise by £1.33 and a large bottle of alcopop would increase by £1.50, shadow home secretary Chris Grayling said.

He told the Conservative party conference in Manchester the tax rises would not hit “responsible drinkers”.

He said: “The ordinary pint in the pub will not be affected and there will be exemptions for some local traditional products.
But we’ll call time on the drinks that fuel antisocial behaviour.”

Daily Express

To put it simply. The Conservatives are saying that they will slap more tax on super-strength beer, cider and alcopops. I have a few worries about this. How strong does a beer have to be to be “super-strength”? Is this going to affect perfectly normal ciders that perfectly sensible people like drinking? And…well… I dont care too much about alcopops… There are comments about some local traditional products being exempt but how do small businesses go about proving they should be exempt?

Surely this is just another tax on a stressed out population who just want to have a drink!

This is all against the back drop of Conservatives not following their own ban on expensive alcohol during the conference. David Cameron being the latest person to be caught out (see left!)

Pubs set to serve beer in two-thirds of a pint glasses

By Anne, 27 September, 2009, 2 Comments

Saw this on the Telegraph website

The Government has decided to end more than 300 years of history by relaxing the law on pub glass sizes.
Currently beer can only be served in pint, half and third of a pint measures.

Surely this is crazy. Ok so pubs dont HAVE to do it, but its another service that they may feel pressured to offer customers. I just cant wondering what the point of this is? Who wants that little bit less of a pint?

After all the difference between two 3rds a pint, and a whole pint is very little once you’ve taken back wash into account…

CAMRA says sales in Devon are bucking the national trend

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has credited the wide variety of beers in Devon for the growth of the industry.

The county has 27 brewers, the fifth highest in England, and the industry is booming despite a national slump in beer sales and a rise in pub closures.

Sales at the Dartmoor Brewery, which started business in 1994, rose by 35% last year.

Owner Simon Lovelass said the brewery was now selling about 200,000 gallons of ale a year.

He believes customers are looking for consistency and quality.

“If they come back and buy our products again and again, then everybody’s happy,” Mr Lovelass told the BBC.

“If they don’t like it they shift to somebody else and that’s when things start to go downhill.”

Landlady Carol Doree, from the Royal Oak in South Brent, said a brewery’s “localness” also appeals to customers.

“We do food with local produce, but you can’t really see that, whereas with the brewers you’ve got the name pack which shows it’s come from just down the road,” she said.

“People like to see beer that’s been produced on their doorstep.”

Ian Packham, the regional director of the CAMRA, said nationally the number of brewers had been increasing steadily for the past 30 years.

“There’s such a variety of different styles and tastes which are growing in popularity here and it’s really good news,” he said.

“We’re definitely bucking the trend of beers in general.”

The Tarka Line Rail Ale Trail

By Anne, 17 September, 2009, 1 Comment

Tarka rail Ale TrailWell from the looks of the this is exeter site, the Tarka Line Rail Ale Trail has been relaunched. I’m not altogether sure what it means as the website looks kinda like the last time I looked at it.

But (as long as I get a new booklet) I’m sure its a good excuse to go on what is basically a long pub crawl along the train line. Expect to see some more on the rail Ale Trail… if I can get a booklet to be stamped!
