Innis and Gunn: Rum Cask

June 20, 2009 By: Anne Category: Beer Review

Innis and Gunn Rum Cask Beer ReviewThis is the sort of beer that comes sealed in a posh black box with a barrel number on the sticker sealing it shut. Making no mistake that this is limited edition.

As you open the bottle the fact that this beer was brewed in ex-rum barrels is obvious as you cant escape the slight smell of rum that greets you.

This is perfect for people who enjoy darker beers, yet also enjoy the lighter taste of blonde beers.

Buy it from Sainsburys and enjoy!

Bet its glad to see us raving about something that isn’t Cornish :- )

How to buy Gambrinus in England

Gambrinus Buy London England Crates Czech Beer lagerOne word. Helusky.

Based in London. These guys will ship Czech beer (and other foods from the Czech republic) anywhere within the UK.

Fantastically quick, they use Google check out - which makes it easy to pay and track your order, and the crate itself was really very well packaged.

Well recommended for any and all Czech food and drink needs!

(Gambrinus Review coming after I’ve sampled a few)

Skinners Cornish Beer: The Raving Continues!

June 14, 2009 By: Anne Category: Beer Review, Pub Review, Pubs

I would hate for people to think we were paid by Skinners to push their products, but I thought I had to follow up my review of Skinners Cornish Lager, I posted a few days ago.

If you find yourself in Exeter City Centre, The Old Well House on the Cathedral Green has it on tap!

Its beautiful and thirst quenching, but a little pricey - but it is a pricey pub anyway…

By the way if anyone from Skinners (or anywhere else) would like to send us beer to review -please feel free to use the above link to contact us!

Skinners, brewery of awesomeness

June 12, 2009 By: Dan Category: Beer Review

After Andy’s very positive writeup of Skinners Cornish Lager, I will add two more reviews.  All three are so positive that I’m tempted to declare Skinners Brewery the most reliably tasty Brewery I have data on (so I need to drink more!)

Skinners Cornish Knocker - This pale ale was enjoyed draught by Andy and myself in the sunshine in Falmouth overlooking the harbour.  It was strong, not to sweet, slightly floral and awesomly refreshing!

Skinners Betty Stogs - We tried this bottled beer from the brewery sitting in the sunshine at the campsite.  At the time I thought it was a beautifully unique tasting red ale, scoring a reliable 5.  I later learnt that it was all over the Skinners shop because it won Best Ale in the 2008 Earls Court “Great Beer Festival”.  Thats some accolade.  I don’t know whether to be sad that I have the same taste as everyone else or glad that I really can taste a good ale from a bad one!

Skinners Cornish Lager

June 12, 2009 By: Anne Category: Beer Review

On a rainy Cornish day, we found ourselves at the skinners brewery. Now sadly the tour isn’t on over weekends, but at least the shop was. Among the ales that myself and dan were checking out, Should I feel alittle ashamed the lager caught my eye?

In a word. No!

Skinners Cornish lager is beautiful. Somehow it has a nice ale over tone, while having a refreshing lager taste. Worth checking out if you can find it!

Carnon Inn / Table Table at Carnon Downs

June 08, 2009 By: Anne Category: Pubs

Carnon Inn at Carnon Downs, near Truro Cornwall

We’ve just got back from camping at Carnon Downs. The camp site itself is more pricey then other places but the site itself is very nice, and the location itself is great. Part of the reason why the location is so good is that its just over the road from Carnon Inn.

Last year we found the food was great, and the service was fantastic. Sadly this year it wasn’t so great. We didn’t have any food or beer - so we cant comment on those, but the service wasn’t great.

During our first evening there we got served a bottle of wine that must have already been used - it seemed a large glass down. Sadly we only realised after we had already poured a few glasses and saw that it barely poured four small glasses worth! During our second evening (a Friday night) we had to wait an age to get served, while after we did get served there seemed to be some confusion with our tab! It was confusing and a little embarrassing at the time, but it did make up for lack of wine on the first evening!

Well even though the staff arn’t as fantastic as they once were, the view from the pub garden is still fantastic, and is worth a visit as somewhere to chill out and relax. It is very much a chain pub, so I would suggest going elsewhere if you want somewhere more traditional.

Summer Beer: Atlantic Fistral Premium Beer

May 30, 2009 By: Anne Category: Beer Review

Atlantic Fistral Premium Beer So you come back from work, the wife is meant to be studying, and its fantastically sunny outside. Whats a guy to do? Personnally I went for this beer that had lived in the fridge since the Exeter Food and drink festival a while back.

Opening it up shows the life the beer has - it went everywhere, maybe it was too chilled or something? Its a strong yet refreshing beer to drink, with a fairly hoppy aftertaste. Perfect for Summer drinking.

Be prepared though for the cloudyness of the drink. To quote Anne when she turned around and saw what I was drinking “That beer looks not right…”

So its a nice refreshing beer, perfect for a sunny day - possibly on a Cornish beach, just dont expect it to look any good…

Cobra Beer bought by Molson Coors

Cobra beers

Cobra Beer is sold in 6,000 restaurants in the UK

Cobra Beer has been bought by a joint venture between Molson Coors and Cobra founder Lord Karan Bilimora after entering a pre-packaged administration.

Administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers said the company had run into financial difficulties in the economic downturn.

A pre-pack is when a sale is agreed before the administrator is appointed and is carried out without the business being offered on the open market.

From BBC News. No idea how this would really affect the Cobra beer itself, but it would be a shame if it started to taste more like water Carling.
